The Blog Report

This weeks blog report brings you a slew of new tutorials for your gawking pleasure. But first we’ll start off with a nice informational piece about Net Neutrality.  It seems that the FCC chairman Kevin Martin agrees that the internet should remain free for all to use and condemned ComCast for choking BitTorrent traffic.

Moving on to the tutorials we start off with a neat write up about using Linux to retrieve information from a Windows machine. This method uses a Ubuntu Live CD to boot the failed machine allowing the user to access their data and files.
Also are two continuing tutorials, the first delves further into c# and self signed SSL certificates. This tutorial delves into the functions that actually send and receive data so check it out.
The next tutorial is a continuation of the Windows PowerShell write up. This time getting into piplining and output management.
Lastly we have a new tutorial that explains how to diagnose slow queries on a mysql box. This tutorial explains how to set up a log file to let you investigate who is beating up your mysql server.

The Blog Report

This weeks blogs kicked off with a write up about how to see if your current computer system is going to be capable of running windows 7.  The new version of Windows isn’t due for another year and a half to two years, but already many consumers who are Vista shy,  are looking to it as a replacement for their aging XP systems.

Google is back at it, adding yet another service to their ever growing e-toolbox. This time they bring us a chat application called Lively. The new application seems to be aimed at competing with Second Life, allowing the user to create three dimensional avatars that can move around and explore a virtual world. It is still in beta so performance may not be it’s strongest suit until they get the bugs worked out.

If you are in the market for a nice low priced micro-PC then consider the Asus 701. LInux is the OS of choice for the majority of those purchasing these mini laptops.  Weighing less then 2 lbs, they offer onboard wifi and a web cam, making it a nice fit for the user who wants to do email, chat, and web browsing.

Lastly we have 2 new tutorials for you. First we covered how to “create a class to handle website interactions, giving us a simple way to post or get information from a web server, with or without an SSL cert and even a self signed one.”
Second, and introduction to Windows PowerShell, a command-line scripting environment which uses the Microsoft .NET Common Language Runtime (CLR) and the .NET Framework.

Welcome back, we hope you have had a great 4th of July holiday. Last week we offered several tutorials. The first explained how to fix the problem where a cd / dvd drive disappears from windows using the registry. From the programming side of things, there is a tutorial on how to create daemons in linux using perl.  Lastly, how to take an extra measure to secure your laptop or home pc by using encryption.

This week the staff of High Speed Web started things off with a nice write up on how to make your digital music available to you from any Internet connected PC. MP3Tunes offers 25GB of free space, and you can purchase more if needed or wanted.

Did you know that it’s estimated that there are over one BILLION PC’s installed around the world? This number does not include the number of PCs that have yet to be sold or have simply been built, but instead the estimated number of PCs in use. This number is also expected to grow by 12% each year as more and more countries develop technologically.

Also a couple of new tutorials are available. The first delves into how to use the Linux tool strace to debug cpanel’s WHM web interface. The second is how to get back the 20% of bandwidth that windows reserves for updates etc. I won’t go into detail on either in this newsletter, but both are worth checking out.

Lastly, if you have ever wanted to try the latest greatest OS from any of the suppliers, but haven’t wanted to hose your system to do so then this post is for you.
“Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), and OpenBSD.”

the Blog report

It has been an eventfull week on the HSW Tech Blog. Mozilla’s newest incarnation of it’s popular Firefox browser was released to the public near 2:00 PM EST after some problems with the main download site on Tues June 17. Despite some plugins no longer working, and some critisim of the delays to the official launch, the browser was fairly well recieved with over 8 million downloads in 24 hours.

The Linux community released Wine 1.0 which promises to allow NIX community the capability of running Windows native software on their OS of choice. With any luck this will help to increase competition with microsoft OS’s benefiting end users across the board. Also covered was the powerfull STRACE debugging utility. This utility “traces, follows, and displays the system calls made by any program.” It was even rumored to be able to make a pot of coffee, which as most techies will attest is something of a holy grail of computing.

Certainly not to be overlooked was a nice write up on the eventual retiring of IP 4 for IP 6 slated for as early as 2010. This would provide capabilities for an almost limitless addressing scheme, with the downside of those addresses being quite long and daunting for those of us who are used to IP 4.

Lastly,  are a few write ups for windows users. Its rumored that we could see the next version of Microsoft’s desktop OS, Windows 7, as early as 18 months from now. The new version is supposed to include support for multi-touch applications, and a similar to Mac OS X dock. Also covered is how to upgrade your windows media player to support playing DVD’s and non native file formats using the K-lite Codec pack. Lastly ever important tips on securing your windows OS using free tools that are easy to obtain and install.
